It’s ALIVE

After a layover from 2014 to late 2019, this blog is coming back to life.

My intention isn’t to start posting new stuff here. I have a different blog for my current output, and it’s very different than this one. This site is for keeping old stuff available.

Move in progress

Coming soon, this blog will redirect to soupgreens.com/blog. That blog will import the archives here, and the URLs for MP3s and other static files will still work.

The Joy Drops is my long time band. The band needs a blog. Either I should call the band Soupgreens or the blog should be named after the band, and the band name has no reason to change.

Hayward Farmer’s Market

With Haywood Douresseau and Dwight Shackleford and an unruly mob of ragamuffins on a Saturday morning at the farmer’s market. It was really Dwight’s show – I was just playing backup – but he passed the mic and I hummed out something that turned into a real actual song.

K. Yun shots

Ryan Lim, Paul McCue and I (aka The Joy Drops) played at a street fair called Urban Air Market a few weeks ago. It was a sunny weekend afternoon with plenty of foot traffic. One of the strollers, a fellow named K. Yun, took some photos, and the other other day he mailed these to me.

I like one-letter names.

Noah Grant was on bass. Noah’s phrasing is agile and limber, and his tone is stretchy like a rubber band. He’s an improvisor more than a memorizer. Playing with him is about being in the moment.

Hollow Poplar, slow and sweet

Here’s a pretty instrumental I recorded on my Collings mandolin. It’s a slow version of a tune that’s usually done as an uptempo fiddle number for square dancing.

A nice shot of Ryan Lim:

Paul McCue couldn’t make the gig, and Cal Keaoola sat in for him.
